Typography—Task 3—

Task 3: Method and discussion of font design

Bachelor of Design (Honours)in Creative Media

WEEK7-WEEK10

Detailed lectures are in Task 1.

Review last week's knowledge and reflection

In the seventh week, our module instructor Mr. Vinod taught us how to write better fonts with five different nibs, and how to write more types of fonts with our own creative methods. The third task of this exercise is different from the previous task, which requires us to design a set of specific letters with certain limitations and be more creative than the previous task.

In class, the instructor introduced us to the baseline as the imaginary line where the letters are, providing consistent horizontal alignment. Note the height and size of the letters in upper and lower case, as well as the comparison to the baseline. Height and distance need to be mastered well, kept balanced and neat, reducing the feeling of clutter. The concepts of baseline, descent line, upper height, and x-height in typography are all things to remember and know how to use. The concept and how to do it should be known.

 Research

The design concept of the font is to design in accordance with the law of visual design, and to arrange the text as a whole in accordance with certain font modeling norms and design principles, so that it can not only convey feelings, but also show a pleasant aesthetic feeling. In these visual designs, it should not only reflect its own beauty, but also achieve perfection with the whole work Harmony and unity.

Text design refers to the overall careful arrangement of text according to the law of visual design. It is the product of human production and practice, and gradually matures with the development of human civilization. It is an important full-text structure technology that enhances visual communication, enhances the appeal and reproducibility of works, and endows layout with aesthetic value. Font designers use specialized tools and software to perfect their designs, ensuring optimal performance and visual appeal. Typeface design is the art and process of creating typefaces and fonts. It includes factors such as making fonts, shapes, styles, legibility and aesthetics. Well-designed fonts contribute to effective communication and play an important role in branding and design projects. Among them, it can better express the design sense of the font.

Regarding the current task and research discussion

In this task, you are required to use five different writing tools for a series of exercises. Specifically, the task includes practicing writing diagonal, horizontal, vertical, and circular lines in five different ways using each tool. These five tools have distinct brush characteristics, each with its own design aesthetics, allowing you to create various font styles.

 Figure 1.1Brush,Standard Broad ,Round,Super Fine, Caligraphy (3mm)

The first step of the research task involved using the five different tools we had prepared to write the sequence "///\\\ _ _ _ OOO AOTMX." Each tool was utilized to create a unique representation of the sequence, and they were all distinct from one another, showcasing different creative styles and inspirations.

Once the initial task of writing "///\ _ _ _ OOO AOTMX" with the five different tools was completed, the subsequent task involved writing the letters "a e t k g r I y m p n" in five different ways using each of the prepared tools. This undertaking provided an opportunity to delve deeper into the tools' capabilities and fostered creative expression in depicting the designated letters.

After using the five different tools to write "a e t k g r I y m p n" in various styles, the next step is to select a preferred style from each tool and use it to create the subsequent design font. In this step, you have the freedom to design the font based on your own ideas without specific limitations, while expressing your intended concept. You can also consider the feedback and suggestions provided by your teacher to design your work for this assignment.

During the week of completing this task, my mentor, Mr. Vinod, provided feedback on my practice and font writing. He suggested that using the Caligraphy (3mm) tool for practice would enhance the aesthetics and engage readers' interest. Therefore, I will proceed with using this tool for the next steps in working on my piece.

After completing the course, I engaged in self-reflection and took into account the thoughtful feedback from my teacher to make improvements in my writing style. I dedicated extra practice using the Caligraphy (3mm) tool. I wrote the provided letters in both lowercase and uppercase styles on the same sheet of paper. The writing experience and aesthetics were different between the two cases. I carefully assessed which style better suited my design preferences and fully completed this part of the assignment.

Research

I practiced using a letter in Adobe Illustrator and after careful consideration, I decided to use uppercase letters for this particular task because I believe they will capture the reader's attention. I made comparisons in terms of size and proportions and proceeded to complete the remaining parts.

Before commencing the digitalization process of the alphabet, Mr. Vinod instructed us to create a layout with dimensions of 1000pt*1000pt. Following that, he specifically requested us to adjust the layout by shifting it to the left above, using the shortcut (shift + o), in order to ensure that it didn't occupy excessive space while working on the design. This adjustment allowed for more efficient use of the workspace and facilitated easier navigation and organization of the elements.

Figure 3.1 font exercise

Mr. Vinod offered instructions on organizing the cap height, x-height, baseline, and descender in the design. To achieve this, we were advised to utilize the ruler tool in Adobe Illustrator. By activating the ruler tool, we could click and drag a line from the ruler positioned above the layout, and then label it with the appropriate measurements and additional annotations.

Figure 3.2 font exercise

Throughout the process, I followed a meticulous approach by documenting each completed step through copying and pasting. This method ensured that I executed each step accurately and provided the flexibility to revert back if necessary. By keeping a record of my progress through the copy-and-paste method, I had the freedom to experiment and make adjustments while maintaining a safety net for potential backtracking.

I followed the same process for all the designed letters, maintaining a consistent style and adjusting their details. I made sure that each step was completed to meet my desired criteria and achieve the desired outcome.

After receiving feedback from my mentor, he suggested that I make corrections to the areas where the letterforms were not smooth, in order to ensure a more harmonious and consistent appearance. I continued working in Adobe Illustrator and dedicated significant effort to refining the details by zooming in on the letters and making subtle adjustments.
After making the necessary modifications to the original font, I proceeded to finalize the letterforms and include the characters ", . ! #".

Poster Design

In the upcoming task, I started using ChatGPT to generate words that can be created using these letters. By interacting with ChatGPT and selecting specific words, I can compose new sentences using those words. ChatGPT offers various possible word combinations, giving me a wide range of options to choose from. I carefully select the most suitable word to apply in the subsequent task.

                                                    FEEDBACK
Week 8

self-reflection  :                                                                                                                                       Creating fonts is indeed a fascinating and rewarding experience. I'm glad you had the opportunity to learn the process and be guided by Mr. Vinod. Trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone often leads to amazing discoveries and personal growth, and sometimes tasks may seem difficult or daunting at first, but once you start working on the problem, you'll realize that you're capable of overcoming the challenge. The important thing is to believe in your own abilities and trust your mentors.
Font creation can be a meticulous and creative process that involves designing individual characters, tweaking font forms, and ensuring consistency and legibility. It requires attention to detail and a keen eye for typography. By exploring typeface creation, you've gained insights into the artistic and technical aspects of typography that will be valuable for your future studies or any endeavors related to design, graphic arts, or communications.
Remember that learning and trying new things is an ongoing process, and each experience contributes to your personal and professional growth. So keep exploring, experimenting, and embracing new opportunities.

Week 9
General Feedback: The key point to remember is that images should be zoomed in or out while maintaining their proportions. The strokes of the letters can be reused rather than constantly redrawn. It's best to write all the letters, compare the strokes, and then convert them into shapes. Creating backups regularly is essential to avoid losing progress.

Specific feedback: When writing, ensure that the position and Angle of the font are consistent. Practice improving alignment and maintaining consistency. Pay attention to the positioning and Angle of each letter. Regular practice will help you get consistent and well-aligned fonts.

Week 10
General feedback: We showed different types and styles of alphanumeric design. To look neat, design how to write letters in a grid. To have the same letter style, select a generated font in the font library that is nearly identical to the font you designed. Like horizontal lines and vertical lines. For curve strokes, you can create two versions of curve strokes: baseline to cap-line and x-height to baseline.

Specific feedback: When designing fonts, do not need too many unnecessary lines, keep the lines clean and neat, so as not to interfere with the viewer's vision.

Week 11
General feedback: I will make sure to keep my writing style, but also follow the writing. conventions.

Specific feedback:                                                                                                                                          "k" : I will simplify the "k" and shorten the tail to make it less complicated. In addition, I will make sure that the rising line of "k" reaches the rising line, and I will make my letter corrections more concise.
Letter "M" : I will improve the letter "M" to make it more refined and visually appealing. I will improve the style of it to make it more prominent.
"#" : I have made a series of styles for "#" and asked the instructor to evaluate them. I will continue to change them according to the instructor's suggestions.
I will try to improve these aspects. Any further instructions or requests from you, I will correct and achieve your desired style.

Week 12

General Feedback: Each step of creating a poster under the guidance of Mr. Vinod is meaningful. It is important to review the mentor's methods to achieve greater personal improvement. Paying attention to the format and font sizes in posters is crucial as the details can attract more attention.

Specific Feedback: In my poster design, I used inconsistent font sizes. After reviewing my work, Mr. Vinod suggested that I change the font sizes to be consistent. This will enhance the overall visual appeal of the poster. Mr. Vinod also mentioned that after making the changes to the font layout and size, I can continue with the design in my current state.

Reflection

Experience:

In Task 3, as a student, I have gained a deeper understanding of typography and Mr. Vinod's design preferences. Mr. Vinod taught us how to use fonts to create a variety of design works. Through continuous research and effort, I have become more adept at tackling this task. I found it challenging at first, and although it was difficult, I persevered and worked hard to complete each step. Initially, I had trouble understanding what the instructor was explaining, but after receiving careful guidance from Mr. Vinod, I felt that it was tremendously helpful and beneficial for me.

Designing my own font for this task seemed simpler to me compared to drawing individual characters. We were required to use different pens to create various font styles. Each person has their own handwriting style, and perhaps I prefer a simpler style that is not too intricate. Every individual's design will be different, and each person's design is creative in its own way.

Through this task, I believe I have conducted deeper research into fonts and gained a better understanding of different font styles. While using "FontLab," I encountered issues with my computer not being able to run it, so I decided to utilize the computers in the classroom to complete my work. Through continuous modifications and adjustments, I achieved the desired results I had envisioned.

Observation:

During font creation, I noticed the importance of maintaining a consistent font style across all letters. It is important to ensure design elements such as rising, falling, adjusting and paying attention to detail. Also, I've realized that the baseline is consistent throughout the font. Creating a font is a complex task that involves repetitive operations and operations needed to maintain the overall integrity of the font. Besides, I have meticulous research. From the ideas I've summarized, readability is the most important thing in font design, and it really is, striking a balance between creativity and legibility is crucial. Overall, this experience highlights the need for careful planning, research and attention to detail in order to design more attractive fonts.

Finding:

Through completing Task 3, I have gained a profound understanding of the significance of type design in visual communication. Fonts are not merely aesthetic choices; they are powerful tools that convey meaning, evoke emotions, and enhance the overall readability and accessibility of written content. Effective typography plays a pivotal role in guiding readers, establishing visual hierarchy, and shaping brand identity. Additionally, font design has a profound impact on user experience, as it helps preserve cultural and historical backgrounds, infusing content with deeper layers of significance. By thoughtful planning and designing of fonts, we have the opportunity to elevate the impact and effectiveness of written communication across various mediums, fostering understanding, strengthening connections, and creating captivating visual narratives.

Further Reading

Typography design has evolved into a highly creative field, offering designers the freedom to explore and unleash their imagination. With the ability to manipulate and modify the size, width, length, inclination, and distortion of text, designers are no longer constrained by the limitations of traditional typesetting. Symmetry, balance, and straight lines play a significant role in the field of layout design.
Typography design carries a dual purpose. On one hand, it serves as a vital medium for information dissemination. On the other hand, it aims to evoke aesthetic imagination and resonance in readers through the visual composition of the layout. It allows designers to convey their perspectives and emotions, enabling their ideas and insights to touch the hearts and minds of readers.

Figure 7.1 picture  on  the internet

In the past, typography design was often associated only with books and publications. Some people believed that typography design merely involved setting a specific format and selecting fonts, without much need for actual design. There was a tendency to overlook the importance of holistic consideration and focus solely on images and graphics. This conservative and traditional design approach, along with misconceptions, greatly hindered the development of layout art.

In reality, layout is no longer solely a technical arrangement. Typography design represents the harmonious integration of technology and art. The art of design is what drives effective communication. As society progresses, the pace of life accelerates, and people's visual habits change, designers are required to update their perspectives, emphasize layout design, absorb modern trends from abroad, and transform our previous design approaches.

Figure 7.2 on the internet

The essence of layout design is not about expressing personal style or achieving singularity, but rather it is a means to effectively communicate client information. Designers often fall into the trap of indulging in their own style or using fonts and graphics that do not align with the subject matter, which often leads to mediocre and unsuccessful designs. A successful layout composition must first and foremost clarify the client's objectives and delve deep into understanding, observing, researching, and considering all aspects related to the design. A concise consultation is a good starting point for well-designed layouts.

Layouts are inseparable from content and should reflect the thematic ideas to enhance readers' attention and comprehension. Only when the theme is clearly and prominently presented, achieving a clear and concise visual hierarchy, can the ultimate goal of layout composition be accomplished. A prominent and well-defined theme is the epitome of design thinking.
