Illustration and Visual Narrative —project 2—

WEEK7-WEEK9

The introduction of this task

The MyTiger project still needs to use the Adobe Illustrator we learned to

design our own works and create them in the way of competition. The focus

is on the composition theory, which can be shown in the style of a traditional

poster. The sense of poster design can attract people to pay attention to one

thing and highlight the theme, which is the focus of a poster design. Only in

this way can we attract more people's attention, which is also the key point

 of this poster design competition.

The task is to explore and develop the 12 Sustainable Development Goals

and the MyTIGER values of Bank Malaysia, to research ideas and reference

projects to create design works, the content is about the fundamental reasons

for some important things and how to change the situation in the future, which

can be expressed in the work. What we need to do is how to present the poster

design completely, and let people clearly feel the reason for the design of this

work.

MyTIGER is an acronym representing the core values of Malayan
Banking Separately speaking is:

T - Teamwork   /      I - Integrity       /     G - Growth

      E - Excellence        /       R - Relationship

These values reflect Maybank's desire to use this idea to channel
and expand ideas for people's future lives.

ABOUT (SDGs)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17
global development goals set by the United Nations that will continue
to guide global development efforts from 2015 to 2030 after the 2000-2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expire.

The SDGS call on the world to act together to end poverty, protect the
planet, and improve the lives and futures of all people. The 17 goals were unanimously adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda sets a course for the
world to achieve 17 goals within 15 years.

Progress is being made in many places, but overall, the pace and scale
of progress is not yet at the level needed to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals. If we are to achieve the Sustainable Development
Goals by 2030, strong action will be needed in the decade beyond 2020.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) aim to address the social, economic and environmental dimensions of development in an integrated way from 2015 to 2030 and shift to a sustainable development path.

Climate Action

I chose Article 13, Climate Action, as this goal. Climate change is affecting
every country in the world, disrupting national economies, affecting lives and                       imposing heavy costs on people, communities and countries, not only now but
likely for a long time to come. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, extreme weather events are becoming more severe, and greenhouse gas emissions are at record highs. If no action is taken, the average temperature of the Earth's surface could rise by more than 3°C this century. The poorest and most vulnerable will be the hardest hit.

Affordable and scalable climate change solutions are needed now to move countries beyond cleaner and more resilient economies. The pace of change is accelerating as more people turn to renewable energy and adopt a range of measures to reduce emissions and improve adaptation. However, climate change is a global challenge that requires solutions to help developing countries move to a low-carbon economy.

I conducted in-depth research on this goal, compared and drew on the reference pictures on many websites, combined their ideas with mine, and basically we had the same idea, that is, how to create to solve this problem, which is also the ultimate goal of this competition. Many people do not have a certain understanding of climate action. So I want to use my ideas to make more people aware of this problem.

As for my ideas, from the research and reference results, I prefer to make innovative designs on the melting of icebergs caused by global warming and the loss of life of some underwater animals due to climate actions. The combination of the two can better reflect the problems and difficulties. Below are some of the reference images I found that will serve as a great source of inspiration for my designs.

Main creative ideas

In accordance with MYTIGER's request, I will focus on the "relationship", so as to show people that there is an inextricable link between atmospheric pollution and Climate Action, which has an important impact on people's living environment. The design drawing should not only reflect the harm brought by climate change to human beings, but also a series of problems. I think I will focus more on the problems caused by temperature rise as the main expression.

Figure 3.1 One of the first sketches I started

The idea for this poster came from some homeless bears in the Arctic.
When I read some reports, I found that they were homeless and poor.
Because of the emissions of various gases, the whole earth's sky will be
polluted, and many animals from the Arctic can not live on the iceberg.
More pollutants are discharged into the water, resulting in a gradual
reduction of aquatic life, threatening their lives. It is global warming that
reduces the living space of human beings and brings harm to human
beings. The earth is shrinking gradually, which not only brings harm to
human beings, but also makes the living environment gradually lost.
Climate change affects and disrupts biological and food chains.

Figure 4.1 Preliminary color drawing

I simply filled in the preliminary composition image and determined the
basic areas. The color matching and more detailed design needed to
be further improved. In Adobe Illustrator, I assigned the pattern that I
needed to continue drawing to each layer so that it was easy to change
and I could add or remove the color directly.

Figure 4.2 Further color drawing

I had some new ideas for the initial color last time. I added the original
design inspiration, Marine garbage and dead fish to the bottom of the
sea, which would better highlight the purpose of this theme. Scattered
garbage and broken bottles are major causes of harm to the oceans.

REFLECTION

This assignment presented a significant challenge as the chosen theme proved to be quite difficult for me. Incorporating multiple pieces of information into a single artwork required careful consideration of design ideas and attention to various details.
Through persistent effort and dedication, I managed to complete the project within the given time frame. The selection and exploration of the theme, as well as the development of a creative approach, posed initial difficulties. However, I overcame these obstacles and successfully produced a final piece.
Throughout this assignment, I acquired a proficient understanding of utilizing Adobe Illustrator as a design tool to bring my creative ideas to life. I extensively researched and collected a variety of reference images, analyzing their strengths and considering how to apply them to my own work. The knowledge and experience gained from this task will serve as valuable lessons for future endeavors.
Overall, this project served as a meaningful learning experience. I faced and conquered challenges, further developing my skills in digital design and illustration.
