Exercise 1

LECTURES

Lecture 1/Introduction

In the first lecture, Mr. Vinod told us about some "typography" technology, which plays an important role in the design concept, and it can clearly make the expression of the design sense more clear, explicit, and comparative. In his lecture, Mr. Vinod talked about the history of printing and how movable type has evolved and been used in modern life. He provides a number of different types of fonts and styles, number size, arrangement, spacing, and many other things are very important. The clear and concise surface is more visually appealing to the audience.

Lecture 2/ development

On the development of early letterform: Phoenicia to Roman

Figure 2.1 early letterform

Figure 2.2 Phoenicia to Roman

Early learning involved some using tools like wood or stone, and some clay. These materials have been used for writing for more than two thousand years.

Figure 2.6 Late 3rd :rustic capitals

In the late thirties to the middle of the fourth century, the typeface was a compressed version of a square font that had been written on parchment, which was efficient but could be blurred.

Figure 2.7 /Roman cursive

Cursive writing is widely used in daily life, and it can be seen that lowercase letters have been used.

Figure 2.8/Uncials

The creators incorporated elements of Roman cursive, which would have made it easier to write in this larger font.

Week3

Typographic design is unique in the design concept, which is composed of formats, letters and symbols.      It can edit all the things we want to express, and has the possibility of infinite amplification. It is a way to express the thoughts of human beings clearly.

About alphabet
Over the centuries, it has become a nomenclature for identifying the various components of a single alphabets form. By learning these words, designers and typographers can have better ideas and ideas about the visual harmony and complexity of alphabets. In the Middle Ages, horizontal lines were drawn to contain and align each line of alphabets. All characters are optically aligned on the baseline. The body height of the lowercase alphabets is basically straight, and the top of the uppercase alphabets is aligned along the lines of the same size.

F   4.17       Static typography is limited in its ability to express words. It expresses the desired idea only in a flat state. It is single, and it has traditional features such as bold and italics
Offer only a fraction of its expressive potential. But static typesetting is used on a larger scale in life, like some advertisements or leaflets that people receive, or letters of introduction to a certain place. The emotional connection it makes with the audience is closely related to its impact and impression level.

F   4.17       Screen typography is used in music videos and advertisements, where they travel widely across the media, moving to the beat of the soundtrack to establish tone or convey brand value. Let the viewer can very clearly feel the design sense and purpose of the screen layout.

TASK/EXERCISES

Exercise 1 type expression

In this exercise one, we have seven choices (Destroy,Surprise,Split,Love,Pause,Party,Silence) to express word types. Among the seven when we need to choose four styles to complete the task.

1. sketches

I choose Split, Love, Party, Surpriser) as my expressions.

                                                         Figure 1.1. Sketches

Split—-For the design of 1 and 2, I used the truncation of letters and the increase of distance. Design 3 and 4, I split them down the middle.

Party——Almost all of my products are pink. I think pink can bring people happiness and show "party" well. Moreover, different shades and fonts of the same color can also show happiness.

Love——In design 1,2, and 3, I used bright colors, where 2 contains upper and lower case, and replaced the edge of 3 with a curve, "v" is a heart.

Surprise—-In the design of 1, I drew the lines as kittens, so as to look more active, 2 and 3 are more square, and the font of 1 looks very free

Animation work
Type expression animation
During this time, we are asked to animate based on one of the type expressions
Designed in Adobe Illustrator and Abode Photoshop. After watching Mr. Vinod's lecture playlist, I got one
With a basic understanding of how to generate basic animations, I decided to animate the word "party”.

Let each frame of animation be linked, they are all an action before the next frame, my idea is to make "party" gradually move, the middle letter will bounce off the bottom part of the "P" and "Y" and tumble.

                            EXERCISE 2

Formatted text

Typography Exercise 2 requires us to format a lot of text, we need to practice it in a detailed way, and surface space and formatting are extremely important. As well as our need to arrange a page of text using our knowledge of text formatting to create a visual that can catch the reader's attention. During the creation process, paragraph spacing and line spacing, font size, alignment direction, and kerning should be switched.

 Kerning and tracking exercises

After watching the video recording the lecture, I used Adobe Indesign to practice the text in the ten fonts given. I adjusted the font size and spacing and alignment of the kerning.

During the production process, I changed the font for each line of text, all the text is the same, using spacing and font size, without changing the self draft, all the font size is the same, so using the contrast of ten fonts can make people feel better.

                                                                         Figure 5.2

         Layout exercise

For this part of the exercise, I used the text provided in advance for a reasonable layout, and then copied and pasted the text into the spacing and columns. I adjusted the font size and line spacing to make the whole page look more tidy. I think a line length of about 53 is the best, because this arrangement can make the whole page more evenly distributed.
I used a left-justified font and added a gray image to distribute the text and image in a unified image.

Further Reading

Regarding the details of typesetting, the adjustment of the position and size of visual information elements such as text, pictures and graphics on the layout is the process of making the layout organized.Typesetting, the text, forms, graphics, pictures and other reasonable arrangement adjustment, so that the layout to achieve beautiful visual effects. In layout, line height is the height that defines a line of text, so we must set the line height according to the text font size. The title is actually related to the paragraph below it, not just a separator between two paragraphs.
To ensure readability and professionalism, your layout should have no more than three fonts. Using too many words can interfere with your vision and make your layout look cluttered. Conversely, fewer fonts make your layout clean and easy to read. You can use one font for the title, one font for the body, and another font for the final signature, creative logo, or subtitle.

Reflection

Typesetting looks like an easy thing to do, but it can be a little difficult to do.Start with the whole layout, don't start with a part, or type while typesetting, so you will only make you feel more cumbersome. When you set out to format your paper, you should do it in a no-format state, such as left-justified, unspaced, etc., to speed up formatting. The principle that should be mastered in the process of typesetting is: the sequence of paragraph - line - word, the overall selection of the article for adjustment. When adjusting paragraphs, pay attention to the distance between paragraphs, so that there is a sense of hierarchy.Line spacing, there should be a certain proportion of spacing between lines, appropriate line spacing, so that people are willing to read the article, beautiful and comfortable, otherwise a look makes people feel tasteless and boring. Character spacing can be a relatively ignored problem, if the kerning is relatively tight and looks dense, the word is too loose gives people the feeling of not too formal, not rigorous attitude, so we must keep the font a moderate.
Consistent fonts, marked fonts should also have the same size, color, font, the whole style is stable and uniform to look clear. In the future, we should pay attention to the kerning, the font size should be adjusted with the whole, the character spacing should be moderate, and each line should maintain the same distance, such as adding pictures should be placed in the most appropriate place, and the title in a reasonable position.

Feedback

Week1

In the middle of this week, this was the first class. Mr. Vinod introduced us to what typography is and how to take it in the following classes.

Week2General feedback: Use more fonts to express different effects, rather than monotonous only emphasize the different fonts and colors, transform a variety of different styles of fonts, first of all to see what you want to express the theme, then choose. Academy - Avoid graphics, illustrations and distortion as much as possible. Brainstorming is about getting all the ideas out there and then judging them, so it doesn't stop the flow of ideas, just getting all the ideas out there and choosing the best ones for our future development. It is also important to check the font to make sure it fits the font on offer so that it is easier to further develop and experiment with the ideas created. We'll also check the font design in case it doesn't match the font Mr. Vinod provided.

Specific Feedback: split ideas, further thinking and exploration, add more ideas, already changed styles, love, party and surprise can add some elements.

Week3
During the third week, physical classes were canceled due to a break. However, Mr. Vinod organized an online meeting at 8 am on that day to provide to the students. In the meeting, Mr. Vinod gave feedback and opinions to all the attendees.

Week4

Specific Feedback: Some suggestions for the Split can be added to the animation pattern to continue animation, make it more vivid, reduce some frames, become more beautiful and comfortable. In general, the word now says exactly what it needs to say, but it can be arranged regularly to make them look neat and creative. The word is a little twisted, and Mr. Vinod doesn't think it needs any more styling. To sum up, Mr. Vinod suggested that I use "party" as my final design. Because this word is more specific to my other designs.

General Feedback:The main principle is to fully represent what is already there and use animation, rather than adding animation to an existing expression. The use of more frames, to average the picture sense, visually, to give people a sense of impact, attract attention.

Week 5 / General feedback: First, if there is too much text, you should avoid centering because it will become difficult to read. Too much text will become unacceptable or won't catch people's attention right away. The text should be 50 characters long because that's what works best. Secondly, the importance of the title, the title should be bold or make the font bigger to make it stand out. For example, use small font for "I am" and large font for "Helvetica". Bold type should be left in the title and not used in the body. In addition, it is best to avoid using Futura Std as body text, as this can reduce the effect of getting better and better. Finally, cross alignment is necessary to ensure visually appealing attention. With these guidelines, it is possible to create a well-formed, easy-to-read, and visually appealing page.

Specific feedback: I need to change the layout position, align the text with the guide line required by the tutor, enlarge the import and picture, and fill in the remaining position.
