RESEARCH AND THINKING

This research and design is still our study of typesetting. Mr.Vinod provided us with three texts, which are respectively"The Role of Bauhaus Thought on Modern Culture," "A Code to Build on and Live By," and "Unite to Visualize a Better World." All of the texts include lead-in text. After researching all the texts, I have chosen the first text "The Role of Bauhaus Thought on Modern Culture,"We will arrange the title and content in a reasonable and beautiful way to make them look more attractive.

The following is the reference figure I found for this design research, which I think is helpful to me, about the design style of the title.

Thought and concrete operation

I sketched the title design in Adobe Illustrator, then imported the title into
Adobe Indesign and adjusted the size and position in advance.

Figure 3.1 Adobe Illustrator sketch screenshot

After tweaking the title, I imported the text into the design as well, preferring to
keep the whole page neat rather than cluttered. I tried everything from
alignment, font size and different font styles, and finally chose vertical
to present the text. A more concise style might make it easier to see
at a glance.

Figure 3.2

In The design of the title, I divided the title into many parts, among which "The role",
"Bauhaus thought" and "modern culture" were arranged to modify the four sides,
which could not only show the uniqueness of the typography but also make the
layout very full. While "of" and "on" were taken out separately for pattern design,
so I changed the font size of them all. In addition, I also overlapped and cut some
words to increase the sense of interesting design.

Mr.Vinod suggested that I should make the title more diversified, because some places
are still empty and can be expanded more. In terms of the content on the right side,
the spacing between the kerning size and each line needs to be increased and changed.
There is too much white space below the page on the right side, and the
text size can be adjusted to reduce the overall imbalance of the page.

For this change, I made a slight adjustment in the font position of the title to
make them look more tidy. I added a black border inside to guide the reader's
reading direction, and I changed the "of" into an artistic text made of shapes,
among which I also drew the arrow logo, then I diversified the two phrases
"Bauhaus thought" and "modern culture", and used different font styles to
highlight the diversification of fonts. The creative combination of presenting
the same phrases in different colors, all of which are transparent gray, in
order of large and small font, adds a lot of fun to the overall design, as
if to draw people's attention to the book, The gradient design about
"modern culture" is also designed in the right page, they are coherent.

Figure 3.3 Screenshot of the second title

Once again, I imported the text content into the design. After completing the
title design, I aligned all the text to the left and divided it into three small
paragraphs. Since there was no long text in this paragraph, I made the font
much larger for the sake of aesthetics. The current format doesn't seem to
have so much empty white space, but is neatly lined up to ensure that
readers notice the content immediately when they view it. As you can see on
the left side of the right page, the gradient style of the title will also appear on
the page, as a guide after reading the title, which may arouse the reader's interest
and enhance the overall typographical beauty.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

General feedback:  When typesiting, keep the layout neat, not too messy, it will
appear unclear purpose, although a jumbled title may attract people's attention,
but keep a concise title, not over exaggerated, to attract readers to continue reading.
It is recommended to avoid placing the title in the middle of the book, as this may
cause parts of the title to be lost or obscured when printed. Also, make sure there
is at least a 5mm gap around the title to provide visual clarity, having important parts
clustered and scattered around makes it feel like it's not the point. When you create
a title, you can express one of the words. It is best to be 5mm above the lead for the
best results. We need more expression in the title.

Specific feedback: For the first final work, there are not many novel ideas for the
title creation. More development of the font and size differentiation can be added.
In addition, attention should also be paid to the typesetting of paragraphs, and pay
attention to the size of the spacing. More title extension and more detailed typesetting
text will make people more clear at a glance. The title is too monotonous, you can
add more creativity and inspiration, and reduce the graphic design that has nothing
to do with the text. Adjust your word size and paragraph spacing. It expresses, but
could make it better. If the headings are separate, it's best if the two fonts look similar,
or if the styles between the fonts look the same, so that they don't stand out too much.

Week 7

General feedback: Mr.Vinod evaluated everyone's work and made some changes
relative to the previous work. Everyone got their own evaluation and plans for
what needs to be done in the future. The final work should be completed by
May 30th.

Specific feedback: Mr.Vinod suggested that I reduce the empty white parts on the back two sides of the title or change the style of the repeated title by filling it, and the color can be replaced and gradually transparent. The text part of the font is too small need to change, and adjust the text box, try to fill the empty part neatly, adjust the balance of the page, so that it will look more coordinated.

Reflection

experience

In the exercise of Task 2 this time, I think we have met many challenges. This
exercise is obviously more difficult than the last one. In the face of more complex
operations, we need to learn more extensive knowledge essentials. In the exercise
of Task 1, we have acquired the foundation of text editing and typesetting, and we
can continue to practice this task after mastering the knowledge we have learned
before. After learning the design of text format, we need to further study how to
create more titles and text. When designing titles, I think it is a challenge for me.
For the relatively simple text, I don't know how to change it so that it can become a
complete work. Maybe I need to learn more works for research and reference. As for
the final work, I think I still have some shortcomings, but this is a complete work to
the best of my ability. I still need to further study and practice the title design, as well
as master the operation of Indesign.

Faced with the challenges of the task, our tutor Mr.Vinod repeatedly observed and
evaluated our works, and asked us to correct them in time, which I think is of great
help to consolidate our knowledge.

observe

About the title and the text, the title will affect the reading sense of the whole page,
it is a very important part of many books and many things that use the title can be seen,
if you focus on an article, then it is likely to be attracted by the title, more media use and products used in life, these will use the title, The design of the title will influence the whole article.

For exercise Self-discovery

Task 2 exercise, we learned the distribution pattern between headings and text, and
how to arrange and design to make more people watch. When readers do not know
what the text is, they often decide whether they will continue to read because of the
title, so the title is an important part, but the design of the title, not too much exaggerated
design, because the article is the focus of the whole page, deviating from the direction will
have an impact on the article. If the title design lacks a connection to the content, it may
seem redundant and too complicated to arouse the reader's desire for further engagement.
The title can be integrated into the text of the page, can also be divided, if you want to be integrated into the text, then we should take into account the layout of the problem, can not
block the text has been in the middle of the text, which will make the title lost when printing.

Future Reading

About Grid

Grid design is the embodiment of modern design concept in binding design. Using
modern typography software, designers can assemble layouts freely. It focuses on
a sense of proportion, order, continuity, clarity, timeliness and correctness. It is based
on rationality, which is in sharp contrast to the free layout design based on sensibility
in the United States. One of the main advantages of grid design is that it imposes rules
and restrictions on inexperienced designers. When he divides up the Spaces to be dealt
with, he gets a cohesive and well-structured plan. This not only greatly improves work
efficiency, but also solves the problem of designer talent depletion.

It is still relatively new, few people use and understand, but it has been unconsciously used in some books and newspapers. In fact, most designers don't understand or misunderstand grids, so they use them incorrectly. If only grid structure is considered without consideration for flexible application and creativity, grids become constraints for boring layouts and rigid formats. The use of grids requires hard work. People working on this will be better able to solve the functional, logical, and aesthetic problems of the grid in many tasks. The designer of the modern book must have the courage to shake the authority of the author for thousands of years. They should not be satisfied with the text symbol as the only means of communication, but should carry out their own new understanding and interpretation according to the text information, and strive to develop from the one-way writing behavior to the multi-directional communication based on the image thinking and visual information exchange. Excellent layout design requires designers to have rich quality, keen aesthetic consciousness, creative thinking, artistic courage and technical knowledge. The quality of the book's cover design is the key to capturing the reader's first glance, followed by the book's page design. The same content uses different typesetting forms, clever use of space can enhance the readability of the book. For designers, it's not the designer's job to fill space, designers should use space.

The basic function of a grid is to organize the information on the page. As it has evolved, the approach has become more complex and precise - from simple text to graphic mixes to the richer, more varied arrangements offered by modern design software. Using the grid system as an auxiliary means can help us make: make the information interface on the computer screen easier to read, make the web page more beautiful, make people feel comfortable, increase the usability of the web page. Because the use of grid systems, backed by scientific theory and aesthetic foundations, prevents us from designing by feel.
