REFLECTION

Experience
In the Design Research Methodology course, I focused my research on the emotional clarity of facial expressions in 2D and 3D animation. I gradually learned how to apply research tools to explore complex topics in a structured and meaningful way. At the beginning of the course, I relied mainly on intuition, assuming that emotions in 2D animation were easier to read, while 3D animation appeared more realistic, without systematically validating this view. As the course progressed, I learned how to formulate clear research questions and objectives, conduct interviews, design questionnaires, and analyze data. This process helped me realize that systematic research methods can greatly enhance the direction and credibility of a design, rather than relying solely on subjective assumptions.

Observation
Through interviews and questionnaire surveys, I observed significant differences in how audiences perceive emotional expressions in 2D and 3D animation. Participants generally felt that 2D facial expressions were more exaggerated and direct, making emotional communication clearer. In contrast, while 3D animation appeared more realistic, it was sometimes perceived as emotionally vague. By coding responses and analyzing emerging patterns, I also noticed that age and digital media habits influenced users’ preferences. Younger respondents tended to prefer the clarity and simplicity of 2D animation, while older users leaned toward the immersive experience of 3D. These observations helped me understand on a deeper level how animation style affects emotional engagement.

Findings
This research helped me realize that there is no absolute superiority between 2D and 3D animation—each has its own strengths depending on the context and audience expectations. 2D animation, with its stylized and exaggerated expressions, communicates emotions more clearly; meanwhile, 3D animation excels in realism and subtlety, but often requires more advanced animation techniques to ensure emotional readability. These findings reinforced my understanding that animation style should align with the intended emotional effect. More importantly, I came to understand that design decisions—whether in animation or user interfaces—should be based on actual user feedback, not just the assumptions of the designer.
