INSTRUCTION
Task 2 exercise
Figure 1.1 sketch
I tried to make it look like a shape formed by letters as a whole, rather
than individual letters. I designed the edges of them to be smoother, which
seems to resemble letters dispersed from the same shape.
Figure 1.2 sketch
Figure1.3 sketch
For these two sketch, the boundaries around the edges are all vertical. I wanted it
to have an overall square style. After Mr. Vinod's guidance, he suggested I
could change the circular style of the second letter "N" to a square style
to make the composition look more unified.
Figure 1.7 Modification suggestions
Based on Mr. Vinod's advice, I changed the design elements to a combination
of square and circular styles, they look more like tool components.
FINAL OUTCOME

TASK 2B: Collateral
In this task, we will use the designed letter elements to create various
items, including an animated artwork, a T-shirt, and potentially more
designs on different items. Additionally, we need to establish an
Instagram account. To streamline the workflow, we will start by finalizing
the design, which will help expedite the subsequent steps. When designing
our works, we should focus on how to capture attention and the desired
impact we aim to achieve.

DIGITALIZATION
Before I proceed with my design, I will create some color palettes to
ensure they align with my artwork. I will use my knowledge and color
combinations to select the ones that best suit my work.
I designed my layout based on a simplistic style, with a black, white,
and gray color scheme as the primary background. The main reason for
this is that my font pattern design incorporates a lot of colorful
elements, so using a monochromatic color scheme allows my work to stand
out.
To achieve a more cohesive look, I plan to add my portrait image to the
page. I created the portrait image using Photoshop, giving it an overall
grayscale feel, and I also changed the background to grayscale, ensuring
a more harmonious overall appearance.
I will use the letter patterns I've created on various products to
enhance the visual appeal for viewers.

Feedback
Week 5:
General Feedback:
In Task 2, there isn't much general feedback, but the emphasis is on updating your work.
Specific Feedback:
For my work, I designed three different options, and I wasn't sure which one to use, so I presented them to the instructor for evaluation. Since my design styles were very similar, the instructor suggested making them all appear as if they were composed of squares or circles, aligning them at both ends, even if it's not in the typography sense, but to maintain consistency. It's necessary to reduce the spacing between them to make them appear more cohesive. For the square "o," there shouldn't be too many curves around it; it should appear as if it doesn't have excessive curvature.
Week 6:
General feedback:
When designing the brand font, consider the background color of the
product, as this will affect the visual perception. Bright colors will
grab more attention, but make sure they also complement and match the
product.
Specific feedback: The colors are too monotonous; you can try adding
more colors and work on color combinations, but don't make them too
bright.
Week 7
General: The instructor introduced to us that we will be creating an
Instagram to continue creating and showcasing our work.
Specific: It's important to incorporate the patterns from our products in
a creative and imaginative way, considering whether the products can best
showcase the pattern when used.
REFLECTION
Experience
My experience with Task 2 completion was quite challenging for me because it required continuous experimentation, and I had very few initial ideas at the time. My progress was slower compared to Task 1, but this allowed me to approach my final assignment more diligently. During the creative process, Mr. Vinod provided me with feedback and, with his guidance, I explored multiple styles, increasing my options. The typography and design of the letters added diversity and complexity to the project. Combining my ideas with a focus on the finer details was of great assistance in crafting my final piece.
Observation
Task 2's letter-based creative design requires more thinking and creativity. Design experience is also crucial. The typography and pattern creation of the letters have a visual impact on the final outcome. In the initial draft designs, the outlines and simple styles are key, and during this phase, feedback from mentors and peers is essential for improvement. Throughout the process, the intermediate steps require more time for repeated experimentation, which is also key to increasing efficiency in task completion.
Finding
In this task, it's essential to remember that the intermediate steps are also crucial for the final product. Through a process of continuous experimentation and revisions, if attention is paid to this right from the initial drafts, it can help avoid making major changes towards the end. This promotes efficiency and is a valuable experience that can be applied to Task 3 to prevent such issues.
FURTHER READING
"Scripts: Elegant Lettering from Design's Golden Age" is a book co-authored by Steven Heller and Louise Fili. It explores the rich tradition of elegant handwritten letters and script fonts throughout history. This book primarily focuses on the Golden Age of design, which was from the early to mid-20th century, during which many logos, advertisements, posters, and printed materials extensively used various handwritten letters and script fonts.
Figure 5.1 Elegant lettering from design golden age
The book introduces the evolution of handwritten letters and script fonts in the history of design, particularly emphasizing their significance during the early to mid-20th century. This era was a pinnacle period for handwritten letter design and art.
It includes various styles such as calligraphy, decorative letters, and candy-colored letters, among others. These styles convey different emotions and aesthetics.
